Mother’s Day Reflections, Date Nights, and the Beauty of Shared Moments

By Schonshary Laidler

Mother's Day has caused me to reflect on the importance of love, family, gratitude, and intentional time together. In a world that constantly demands movement, productivity, and noise, moments of peace, laughter, meaningful conversation, and exceptional food become memories that settle deeply within the heart.

One of my absolute favorite ways to reconnect with my husband is through date nights. Whether elegant and extravagant or simple and intimate, the true luxury is never merely the price of the meal, but the presence of the person sitting across from you.

Recently, we returned to one of my favorite restaurants, New York Prime, and once again, the experience reminded me why it remains one of our most beloved dining destinations.

The ambiance was sophisticated yet relaxing, creating the perfect atmosphere for conversation, connection, and uninterrupted quality time. From the moment we were seated, the service was exceptional. Our waitress, Brandy, provided outstanding hospitality and ensured that every detail of our experience was handled with care and professionalism.

I ordered the tomahawk steak cooked medium well, paired with a baked potato fully loaded with butter, sour cream, bacon, and chives. My husband enjoyed a baked potato prepared the same way. Every bite was rich, flavorful, and deeply satisfying. The steak was remarkably tender, perfectly seasoned, and cooked beautifully.

We also ordered the hot crab cake. While it tasted slightly different from the one I enjoyed during our Valentine's Day visit, it was still enjoyable and well-prepared. However, the true star of the evening, without question, was the butter cake served with ice cream.

Describing the butter cake almost feels impossible because words truly fail to capture how indulgent and unforgettable it is. Warm, buttery, delicate, and perfectly balanced with the cold ice cream, it is the kind of dessert that lingers in your memory long after dinner ends.

People often associate luxury with price tags, but I have learned that some of life's richest moments are found in simple togetherness. Whether a couple spends $60 or $1,000, the most important thing is cherishing the opportunity to spend intentional time with one another.

Food is absolutely within the top five love languages in our marriage. There is something comforting about sitting across from the person you love while sharing incredible meals, exchanging stories, dreaming together, and simply enjoying each other's company without distraction.

Date nights are not merely about dining. They are about maintaining connection. They are about protecting intimacy, friendship, and companionship within marriage. They are reminders that even amidst responsibilities, work, ministry, and life's pressures, love still deserves attention and cultivation.

Today, on Mother's Day, I encourage every woman, wife, and mother to remember that caring for others should not come at the expense of creating beautiful moments for yourself. Life is precious. Love is precious. Time is precious.

And sometimes, healing, joy, and gratitude can be found sitting across from the person you love, sharing a warm butter cake and simply enjoying the gift of togetherness.
