Winter Fairytale in Switzerland: Love Beyond Routine
By Gerrard & Schonshary Laidler
There is something profoundly intimate about leaving behind the familiarity of everyday life and traveling across the world with the person you love. Far away from responsibilities, routines, notifications, obligations, family, and the constant demands of life, you are reminded that marriage is not merely about surviving together, but truly experiencing life together.
In 2025, my husband and I were blessed to travel to several beautiful destinations throughout the United States, including Miami, my hometown, California, Utah, and Missouri. Yet despite all the beauty we encountered throughout the year, nothing compared to the breathtaking experience of closing the year in Switzerland for my husband’s birthday celebration.
From the very beginning, the trip felt enchanting.
We flew with Delta Air Lines with a layover in Amsterdam before arriving in Switzerland, and the experience was exceptional from departure to return. The atmosphere felt refined and relaxing. The flight attendants were gracious and attentive, the meals were beautifully prepared, and every detail heightened our anticipation for the adventure ahead. There is something exhilarating about boarding an international flight with your spouse knowing that together you are about to create memories neither of you will ever forget.
After arriving at Zurich Airport, we boarded the train toward Lucerne, and almost immediately, we became captivated by the scenery unfolding outside our windows. Snow-covered villages, towering mountains, glistening waters, and charming European architecture surrounded us like scenes from a cinematic masterpiece. It genuinely felt as though we had stepped inside a movie.
At one point during our travels, we stopped in a quaint village where my husband purchased rich, melt-in-your-mouth Swiss chocolates that tasted unlike anything we had ever experienced. The cold, however, was absolutely relentless. Our hands felt numb within minutes.
Ironically, before the trip, when I mentioned purchasing gloves, my husband confidently insisted, “I don’t need those. You’ll need them more than I do.”
Switzerland quickly humbled that confidence.
Not long after arriving, he gratefully thanked me for purchasing them after all.
Before traveling, I intentionally researched winter attire because European winters are vastly different from what many Americans are accustomed to. I wanted us properly prepared for the freezing temperatures, so I carefully selected insulated jackets, gloves, and winter accessories suitable for Switzerland’s climate. Anyone planning to visit Europe during winter should absolutely prepare accordingly because the cold there possesses an entirely different intensity.
Once we arrived near Lucerne, we purchased tickets for the beautiful MS Bürgenstock Catamaran, which transports guests across the stunning waters of Lake Lucerne toward the world-renowned Bürgenstock Resort Lake Lucerne.
Since we had time before boarding, we stepped into a nearby coffee shop to escape the freezing air. I ordered hot chocolate while my husband enjoyed green tea. The bill totaled nearly fifty dollars, yet somehow, in that moment, none of it mattered. We were fully immersed in the experience.
As the boat glided across the dark waters that evening, we were completely mesmerized. The stillness of the lake, the shimmering reflections from luxurious homes nestled along the shoreline, the quiet elegance of the night sky, and the peaceful sounds of the water created one of the most romantic atmospheres imaginable.
There are moments in life that feel too beautiful to fully articulate.
This was one of them.
We took countless photographs, laughed continuously, and looked around almost speechless at the beauty surrounding us. Being in another country with the person you love creates a different level of intimacy. You are removed from the pressures and distractions of ordinary life. There are no familiar streets, no routines waiting for you, no outside interruptions competing for your attention. It becomes just the two of you experiencing wonder together.
Travel has a way of softening the soul.
It reminds couples how beautiful companionship truly is.
Upon arrival, we boarded the legendary Bürgenstock Funicular, and honestly, we were completely astonished. Ascending the mountain toward the resort while overlooking the magnificent surroundings felt surreal. Every aspect of the experience radiated sophistication and exclusivity.
From the moment we entered the resort, we were treated with extraordinary hospitality. The staff welcomed us warmly and professionally, making us feel less like guests and more like honored visitors. The ambiance throughout the property was luxurious yet serene, elegant without feeling pretentious.
Our suite was absolutely stunning.
The room featured modern European elegance, soft lighting, sophisticated furnishings, and an exquisite rainfall shower that instantly created a spa-like atmosphere. One of the most breathtaking features was the private balcony overlooking Lake Lucerne. Although portions of our stay were incredibly cold and fog-covered, preventing us from fully seeing the lake at times, even the fog itself carried a certain romantic beauty. It gave the mountains and waters an almost mysterious, dreamlike quality.
The following morning, we enjoyed breakfast surrounded by breathtaking mountain views and a lavish assortment of international cuisine. The selections were endless. Fresh pastries, gourmet cheeses, fruit, meats, specialty dishes, and delicacies from various cultures filled the space. While many of the dishes were delicious, a few were certainly an acquired taste, reminding us how beautifully diverse food becomes once you begin traveling internationally.
Later that day, we journeyed across the snowy mountains near Mount Pilatus, and it became one of the most unforgettable moments of the trip.
I had always dreamed of experiencing a true white Christmas, and Switzerland fulfilled that dream beyond anything I could have imagined.
The snow-covered mountains looked almost unreal, as though heaven itself had touched the earth. Normally, heights make me nervous, but the scenery was so breathtaking, so peaceful, and so picturesque that fear simply disappeared. I became completely overtaken by the beauty of the moment.
Standing in such a magnificent place beside the person I love felt deeply emotional.
There is something indescribable about experiencing beauty with your spouse in a foreign country far away from everything familiar. It strengthens friendship. It deepens connection. It creates memories woven with emotion rather than routine. In those moments, marriage feels less like obligation and more like adventure.
The hotel chauffeurs transported us to and from our excursions, adding another layer of luxury and convenience to the experience.
After returning to the resort, we changed clothes and visited the spa and pool area, which felt absolutely heavenly. Warm waters surrounded by snowy landscapes created the perfect contrast between comfort and nature. The atmosphere was tranquil, intimate, and restorative. Sitting quietly beside my husband while overlooking Switzerland’s breathtaking scenery felt like complete peace.
One thing that truly stood out throughout our stay was the remarkable hospitality. Every staff member we encountered carried themselves with professionalism, warmth, and attentiveness. Their welcoming spirit elevated the entire experience and made the resort feel even more luxurious.
That evening, we dressed for dinner and enjoyed a beautiful dining experience at Oak Grill & Pool Patio inside the resort. We ordered ribeye, bone marrow, and exquisitely prepared vegetables, and every dish was rich, flavorful, and beautifully presented. Dining there felt less like dinner and more like an experience curated with intention and elegance.
As I reflect on our travels throughout 2025, Switzerland remains etched into my heart in a way words can scarcely capture.
Beyond the luxury, beyond the scenery, beyond the elegance of the resort itself, the most meaningful part of the journey was sharing it with the person I love.
Because at the end of the day, the true beauty of travel is not simply the destination.
It is having someone beside you with whom the memories become timeless.
